ME Transitioning to Digital-First Delivery

Starting in 2025, ASNT is moving to a digital-first membership model. As part of this change, Materials Evaluation will no longer be printed and mailed to all members each month. The final automatically mailed issue will be August 2025.

This change helps ASNT keep membership dues affordable as printing and postage costs rise, as well as reduce our environmental impact.

We’re also enhancing your digital experience with a new way to explore Materials Evaluation content online, launching later in 2025.

Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM)

Tuesday, 13 May 2025
2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET

Register for Meeting

ACFM is an electromagnetic nondestructive testing technique that provides one pass inspection and capable of detecting and sizing surface or near surface breaking cracks in metals. The technique is suited for inspecting painted welded structures without removing the paint.

A modern ACFM inspection system comprises a field inducing probe with state of art low noise analogue electronics coupled with a built-in control system and easy to use Microsoft Windows based analysis software. The use of mathematical models to predict crack size. The models predict how electromagnetic fields are affected by the presence of breaking fatigue crack.

Advantages of ACFM technique in comparison to magnetic particle and eddy current NDT inspection techniques:

  • The ability to detect defects through 0.1-0.2 in. (2.5-5mm) thick or more of non-conductive coating.

  • The ability to obtain depth information on cracks up to 1 in. (25mm) deep.

  • Easy testing at material boundary

  • No requirement for onsite calibration.

  • Detection and sizing in one instrument
