Charlotte, North Carolina

On 25 February, Charlotte Section member Ryan Dickey and Section Chair Kirsten Groenewald participated in a STEM/career day for CC Griffin Middle School, presenting virtually on the basics of nondestructive testing (NDT).

On 9 March, the Section held its fourth technical meeting of the program year. Guest Speaker Paul Holloway of Holloway NDT & Engineering Inc. gave a presentation on the company’s newly developed multipipe diameter ASME-type piping calibration blocks, detailing the design and potential advantages for these types of calibration blocks. The meeting was held virtually with 19 members in attendance.

Nineteen members attended the Charlotte Section’s virtual technical meeting on 9 March.


Chicago, Illinois

The Chicago Section met virtually on 8 March with 30 guests and members from Region 12 in attendance. The speakers for the evening were David J. Ronzani, James R. Dinell, and Steven J. McCullough of Alltranstek LLC. The title of their presentation was “The Qualification and Maintenance of Railroad Tank Cars Using NDT.”

Ronzani chronicled the history of the development and changes in tank cars from 1863 through the present, explained how they are manufactured, and highlighted the NDT methods used to inspect them. Next, Dinell addressed regulatory requirements and explained the involvement of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and American Association of Railroads (AAR) in the application of the rules for qualification and risk-based assessment of cars. He also reviewed the development of NDT personnel qualification and certification under the AAR rules. Finally, McCullough described the inspections in detail and how various NDT methods such as VT, MT, PT, RT, UT, LT, and IR are applied. Section Chair Charles (Chuck) P. Johnson of Karden Sales expressed appreciation to the speakers and to the audience for their attendance and the valuable questions presented at the conclusion of the presentation.

The Chicago Section learned about inspection of railroad tank cars and the different NDT methods that can be applied at its March meeting.


Kuwait City, Kuwait

The Kuwait Section organized its eighth technical presentation of the program year (July 2020 to June 2021) on 26 January via an online platform. The title of the presentation was “Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Technique – Basic Requirements,” and the presenter was Sangili Gunasekaran, unit head for the Quality Operations, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control Department of M/s Heavy Engineering Industries and Shipbuilding Co. K.S.C (Public), Kuwait.

 Gunasekaran explained the TOFD technique’s basic requirements, including ASME Section V Mandatory Appendix III and API RP 934 annexures; applications for submerged arc welding, low-alloy steel welding, reheat cracking detection, in-service LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) storage sphere tank inspection, and oil storage welded tanks for API 650 Appendix U (Automated Ultrasonic Testing) in lieu of radiographic testing. The presentation was very useful for NDE professionals and served as a valuable refresher for the latest updates in codes and standards. About 13 professionals attended the technical presentation.

The Kuwait Section learned about the basics of time of flight diffraction at its 26 January meeting.

North Alabama

Huntsville, Alabama

North Alabama Section Vice Chair Richard Elvin Mitchell II virtually hosted a combined meeting for Region 6 on 18 February. The meeting was conducted by Regional Director, Region 6, George K. Hodges. Special thanks to all who attended and to Hassina Z. Bilheux, Ph.D., for an outstanding presentation on her work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Rockford Stateline

Rockford, Illinois

The Rockford Stateline Section held a virtual technical meeting on 9 March with 26 members and guests in attendance. The guest speaker for the evening was Stuart A. Kleven, Level III of Alloyweld Inspection located in Bensenville, Illinois. Kleven spoke on “Calibration for NDT: Everything You Wanted to Know about Calibration but Were Afraid to Ask.” He first gave an overview of the definitions involved and applicable governing specifications used for standardization. Then he discussed qualification requirements for standardization labs and the development of uncertainty values and how they are applied to the tolerance required. He also explained how to write an effective purchase order for standardization and how to verify that a proper standardization had been performed upon receipt of the instrument. Finally, he addressed the typical standardization requirements for equipment used in liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonics, and radiography. The Rockford Stateline Section held a virtual technical meeting on 9 March where guests learned about standardization for NDT.

Saudi Arabian

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian Section held its eighth technical meeting for the 2020–2021program year on 24 February. The meeting was conducted virtually and was attended by 93 members and guests. The meeting was held in partnership with Silverwing (an Eddyfi Technologies brand) and Mohamed & Abdul Rahman Al-Othman Co. The Section was also honored by the presence of Regional Director, Region 19, Marwan F. Basrawi. Senior Applications Specialist Matthew Kircough of Silverwing/Eddyfi NDT delivered a presentation titled “Next Generation Tank Floor Scanning—Total Inspection Efficiency.” At the end of meeting there was a Q&A session and raffle drawing for the participants.

The Saudi Arabian Section held its eighth technical meeting of the program year on 24 February and learned about tank floor scanning.
