The ASNT 2017 Research Symposium, sponsored by CSX, was in Jacksonville, FL 13-16 March. If you weren’t there, you missed an incredible three days of dynamic presentations on some of the industry’s latest research that will lay the foundation for the future of the NDT and NDE. The concurrent session included:
- NDE of Railroads
- NDE of Aerospace
- Materials Characterization
- NDE of Composites
- Structural Health Monitoring
- NDE in Additive Manufacturing
- NDE of Pipelines & Pressure Vessels
- SHM Challenges for Air Vehicles
- Acoustic Emission
- NDE of Adhesive Bonds
- Camera Based Methods for Civil Infrastructure
- NDE of Joints
- Advancing NDE Methods
- Electromagnetic Methods
The Research Symposium is always a great time for those in academia and the research/innovation area of NDT to compare notes and discuss the finer points of the presentations. There is also a great deal of relevancy for anyone in NDT and NDE who wants to hear directly from research leaders and see methodologies and calculations firsthand. All of these presentations provided an opportunity for symposium attendees to look at their current processes through a different lens.
Industry leading speakers kicked off each day
Each day started with a speaker whose topic presented a unique perspective and response to this year’s theme: “Advancing NDE Technologies, Research, and Engineering in a Changing World.”
- Larry Biess, Director of Business Intelligence – CSX; “Predictive Analytics of NDE in Railroads”
- John Newman, 2017 Research Award for Sustained Excellence; “The Development and Application of Shearography NDT”
- Dr. Edward R. Generazio, 2017 Research Award for Innovation; “Electric Potential and Electric Field Imaging with Dynamic Applications”
There were terrific takeaways from each speech. The speakers shared their successes as a result of embracing change through the innovative use of NDE applications.
Exhibitors offer innovative solutions
There were industry mainstays and first time exhibitors alike to present solutions for technology challenges facing the industry. The exhibition hall was host location for the symposium’s welcome reception and lunch giving every symposium attendee the opportunity to grab a bite to eat while also discussing the purchase of the services and products of the exhibitors onsite.
A great location for meetings and more!
As with all of the world-class events produced by the ASNT Conference team, this location was ideal. Although the weather wasn’t very seasonable and was on the cooler side, the meeting space was located on the St. Johns River at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. This location was within walking distance of many lauded eateries such as Casa Dora whose proprietor makes dining guests feel like family and old friends. The hotel had views of several Jacksonville infrastructure projects including the steel vertical lift bridge, the Main Street Bridge, which could be seen lifting its span for the tall sails of boats passing beneath it. A special treat for symposium attendees was being able to catch glimpses of dolphins and manatees in the river.
You can always count on having a world-class experience at ASNT conferences. The ASNT 2017 Research Symposium was no exception.
