ASNT Applauds the State of Ohio’s Decision to Remove Rides from Service

26 July 2019

COLUMBUS, Ohio July 26, 2019 - The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) applauds the swift response by Ohio Department of Agriculture officials to remove five (5) rides from service at the 2019 Ohio State Fair upon inspection. Their decision to mandate remediation of four and permanently close one is appropriately cautious and puts the lives of the nearly 1 million fairgoers first.

Recalling the unfortunate tragedy of the 2017 Ohio State Fair when corrosion was found to cause the catastrophic failure of the Fireball ride killing one person immediately and critically injuring others, ASNT is pleased that the revised inspection protocols by the State of Ohio to prevent any future accidents preempted the consumer exposure to the potential danger of these rides.

As the preeminent world society for nondestructive testing (NDT), ASNT and its over 22,000 members and certification holders worldwide recognize the inspection of amusement attractions as imperative to ensure visitor safety. Nondestructive testing is conducted on amusement park and fair rides to detect cracking and corrosion on welds and critical structural members using methods such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, liquid penetrant testing, radiographic testing, eddy current, and visual testing.  NDT is used in many other industries to inspect critical components to assess the life of the component and ensure the safety of the operators and the general public.

“ASNT is deeply vested in the outcomes from all NDT inspections,” said ASNT Executive Director Neal Couture. “The global reach of ASNT’s certification programs to ensure highly qualified inspection standards necessitate ASNT’s engagement and monitoring of emergent situations so we avail resources to support the mitigation of accidents such as in 2017.”
