What’s Involved? Steps to ASNT ATO Accreditation

Accreditation requires a detailed audit of your training organization’s practices and procedures for compliance with ASNT’s specifications. In addition, the program includes a comprehensive review of your training curriculum, instructor qualifications, and operational procedures—verifying adherence to ASNT guidelines.

  1. Verify eligibility and complete application
  2. The application is reviewed
  3. Conditional approval is provided, and a site survey is scheduled
  4. Notification of accreditation and listing on online registry

Gather Your Documentation

To start the process, be sure your designated point of contact has an ASNT ID.

ATO applicants must submit:

  • A completed and signed application
  • Payment at time of application
  • Documentation for all program instructors
  • Signed terms and conditions

ATO Assessment Process

The journey to becoming an Authorized Training Organization (ATO) involves a thorough and rigorous accreditation process to ensure that all participating organizations meet the high standards set by ASNT.

The accreditation process includes two main assessments:

Administrative Assessment

Submit information and complete an interactive desk audit covering:

  • Financial and insurable stability
  • Marketing materials
  • Admission policy and agreements
  • Student information publications
  • Enrollment agreements
  • Training organizational structure
  • Service and business ethics

Once accepted, organizations are conditionally approved pending a completed operational assessment.

Operational Assessment

Submit information and complete a site survey at the facility covering:

  • Staff qualifications
  • Data storage facilities
  • NDT training equipment
  • Lesson plans/training curriculum
  • Criteria for evaluating training outcomes
  • Training organization management/quality management system
  • Student assessment process
  • Facility alignment to industry codes/standards and safety
  • Teaching safety in NDT courses

Once successfully completed, organizations receive their certificate of authorization (COA) as an approved ATO.
