Elevate Your NDT Career with a Standout Cover Letter

A guide to help you craft the perfect cover letter

Cover letters are a concise way to communicate your value to a company. They demonstrate your anticipation of the company’s needs and what you can bring to the table, and are an invitation to read more details regarding your background and experience. Like your resume, your cover letter needs to be focused on your accomplishments and results.

The letter should have three primary elements:

Identify the Position

Clearly state the position you are applying for and where you found the job listing.

Match Your Experience and Skills

Explain how your experience and skill sets match this position.

Closing Statement

Express your desire to be employed by this specific company.

The Power of a Well-Crafted Cover Letter

A cover letter can make the difference between securing an interview or being overlooked. By effectively addressing the needs of the company and showcasing your unique qualifications, a cover letter enhances your application. Here are essential tips to help you create a compelling cover letter.

  • If Possible, Address It To a Specific Person: To find the right contact, you can:

    • Use LinkedIn or Facebook to search to find who might be responsible for hiring.

    • Using a search engine, look for the company's name, the position title, and keywords like "jobs", "employment", "human resources", or "careers" to see if they have listed a hiring contact in the past.

    • Call the organization and ask the receptionist for the hiring contact.

    • Contact a current or former employee who can provide the name of the hiring manager.

  • Avoid Repetition: Do not repeat the contents of your resume in your cover letter.

  • Format: Use a minimum of three paragraphs (introduction, body, conclusion).

  • Proofread: Ensure your letter is free of errors. Have at least one other person review the letter for mistakes and overall impression.
