Open Call for Papers

We’re seeking experts to share their knowledge and insights on specific topics in Nondestructive Testing. If you have specialized expertise or groundbreaking research in the following topics, we invite you to contribute to Materials Evaluation.

Deadline: 15 December 2024
Publication Date: June 2025

Uncertainty analysis and quantification (UA&UQ) are fundamental in ensuring the reliability and accuracy of nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/E) methods. This special issue of Materials Evaluation, to be published in June 2025, aims to consolidate recent research activities that utilize UA&UQ to enhance the precision and reliability of NDT/E across various industries. By systematically identifying, modeling, and quantifying uncertainties, researchers and engineers can improve the robustness of evaluation processes, leading to more accurate assessments of material and structural integrity.

We invite submissions that explore advancements in UA&UQ methodologies for NDT/E, including probabilistic methods, statistical analysis, and simulation techniques. Potential topics include the application of Bayesian inference, Monte Carlo simulations, and machine learning to characterize and mitigate uncertainties. Papers focusing on the impact of these advanced techniques on leveraging AI, statistical methods and case studies, reducing false positives and negatives, and ensuring the safety and longevity of critical infrastructure are particularly welcome. The goal is to showcase cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of NDT/E, ensuring highly reliable data and intelligent maintenance practices.

Potential topics include:

  • Probabilistic methods in NDT/E

  • Statistical analysis of measurement uncertainties

  • Simulation techniques for uncertainty propagation

  • Bayesian inference in uncertainty quantification

  • Monte Carlo simulations in NDT/E

  • Machine learning applications for UA&UQ

  • Impact of UA&UQ on reducing false positives and negatives

  • Reliability assessments of critical infrastructure using UA&UQ

  • Case studies demonstrating UA&UQ in NDT/E

  • Advances in sensor technologies for UA&UQ

  • Intelligent maintenance and NDE 4.0 practices driven by UA&UQ

Each paper accepted will be assigned a DOI number. Technical Focus Issues of Materials Evaluation are open access, ensuring high visibility for your paper. Accepted papers are also exempt from publication fees.

Submission Process

Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Before submission, send a short abstract or tentative title to Technical Editor Yiming Deng, ASNT Fellow and Professor and Director of the Nondestructive Evaluation Laboratory at Michigan State University; dengyimi@egr.msu.edu.

Manuscripts should be submitted via Materials Evaluation’s submission portal. Please mention in your cover letter the special issue topic that you are submitting to.

Deadline: 15 June 2025
Publication Date: January 2026

The rapid disruptive shift from internal combustion engine to battery electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates new nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/E) inspection techniques to ensure first-time quality. This special issue of Materials Evaluation, to be published in January 2026, aims to consolidate research activities related to EV and EV component inspection. Many EV components necessitate quality inspection techniques that must operate under a demanding set of constraints, including extremely fast cycle times, noncontact, materials with small geometric scales, and conductive materials. We invite submissions that explore advancements in NDT/E technology and methodologies for EVs and EV components, including battery cells/packs/modules, electric motors, and electric motor components. Papers focusing on inline manufacturing techniques are particularly welcome. Process monitoring techniques are also welcome. The goal is to showcase cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of NDT/E, ensuring first-time quality of EVs.

Before submission, send a short abstract or tentative title to Technical Editor Megan McGovern, PhD, PE, Staff Researcher for General Motors Research and Development, megan.mcgovern@gm.com.
